In a movie obsessed country like India, movie heroes are worshipped as the demi-gods and their fans are not simply elated with just a single autograph or photograph. But get very passionate and obsessed with their stars and are always ready to go beyond to show their length of love. The rivalry between the fans of star heroes also a familiar concept, and if they have their releases during festivals, then there will be tug of war between the groups.
Here we take you down the memory lane where the two big superstars Tollywood Chiranjeevi, and Balakrishna’s movies clashed at the box-office. This is not the first time– here we are giving a glimpse of 18 times the two star heroes clash at the box office.
Agnigundam – Sri Veerabrahmendra Swami (1984)
“Sri Veerabrahmendra Swamy” was senior N.T.R.,’s directorial, which was a blockbuster of 1984. Based on the life and preachings of the great saint and the predictor of future, Sri Veerabrahmendra Swami. The movie was well received by the audience. Though the movie featured Balakrishna, it was because of the legendary N.T.R.,’s charisma that created wonders at the box office. On the other hand “Agnigundam” didn’t fetch much response amongst the audience in spite of Chiranjeevi being in the best phase of his career. Agnigundam” was directed by Kranthi Kumar.
Mangamma Gari Manavadu – Intiguttu (1984)
Both the films were released just with a gap of a day. Balakrishna’s “Mangamma Gari Manavadu” released on 3rd of September and Chiranjeevi’s “Intigutti” was released the next day. The Balakrishna starrer was actually very special for the actor and director too, as both, the actor and the director came into limelight with this flick. Chiranjeevi’s “Intiguttu” was directed by K. Bapayya, which was an average film.
Kathanayakudu – Rusthum (1984)
In the same year a third time in a row, Megastar Chiranjeevi’s film “Rusthum,” directed by A. Kodandarami Reddy clashed at the box office with Balakrishna’s “Kathanayakudu” directed by Murali Mohan Rao within a gap of 7 days. This film has changed the fate of Balakrishna and established him as star hero in TFI. Chiru’s film could not impress the audience and Balayya got fourth consecutive hit with this movie.
Atmabalm – Chattamtho Poratam (1985)
This was the first ever a time where both these superstars’ movies released on the same day, which was 11th January. Chiranjeevi won the box office and Balakrishna’s movie just crossed the break-even point.
Maghadheerudu – Muddula Krishnaiyya (1986)
Balakrishna’s “Muddula Krishnaiyya” was directed by Kodi Ramakrishna. Chiranjeevi’s “Maghadheerudu” was directed by Vijaya Bapineedu. In this clash, again Balakrishna’s movie took over Chiranjeevi. “Maghadheerudu” became an average flick, whereas “Muddula Krishnaiyya” walked away with all the laurels.
Rakshasudu – Apoorva Sahodarulu (1986)
These movies were released within the gap of a week for the Dussehra season. Balakrishna’s “Apoorva Sahodarulu” was directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. The movie did considerably well at the box office, but Chiranjeevi’s “Rakshasudu,” directed by Kodanda Rami Reddy took the box office by storm with thunderous collections.
Kodaveeti Raja – Nippulanti Manishi (1986)
Though both movies were blockbusters, Chiranjeevi’s “Kondaveeti Raja” collected more than Balakrishna’s “Nippulanti Manishi.” Interestingly these movies were released within a gap of a week.
Bhargava Ramudu – Donga Mogudu (1986)
“Bhargava Ramdudu” starring Balakrishna and “Donga Mogudu” starring Chiranjeevi had doubled their fan following of these actors. Both the movies collected equally at the box office. “Donga Mugudu” was also a musical blockbuster with the tunes of legendary singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam. Incidentally, both the blockbusters were delivered by the same director A. Kodanda Rami Reddy.
Ramu – Pasivadi Pranam (1987)
Despite both the movies being released within a gap of a week, they both were declared as blockbusters. Balakrishna’s “Ramu” was directed by Y. Nageswara Rao and produced by D. Ramanaidu. Music was composed by S.P. Balasubrahmanyam. Chiranjeevi’s “Pasivadi Pranam” was directed by A. Kodandarami Reddy and produced by Allu Arvind. The movie’s success catapulted Chiranjeevi’s stardom to greater heights which helped him to rule the Tollywood box office unanimously for the next two decades.
Inspector Pratap – Manchi Donga (1988)
Was it the police and thief game? Both the stars’ movies were blockbuster hits. “Manchi Donga” was directed by K. Raghavendra Rao and “Inspector Pratap” was directed by Muthyala Subbaiah. Both the movies have Vijayshanthi as a lead female lead.
Ramudu Bheemudu – Yuddha Bhoomi (1988)
Chiranjeevi’s “Yuddha Bhoomi” which released on November 11 again had a clash with Balakrishna’s “Ramudu Bheemudu,” which released after seven days of the gap. Directed by K. Murali Moahana Rao, “Ramudu Bheemudu” took the storm at the box office with huge collections and made “Yuddha Bhoomi,” directed by K. Raghavendra Rao an average grosser.
Hitler – Peddannayya (1997)
Balakrishna and Chiranjeevi were back with a clash after a long time. Chiranjeevi’s “Hitler” was directed by Muthyala Subbaiah and Balakrishna’s “Peddannayya” was directed by Sharath. Both movies were super hits.
Samarasimha Reddy – Sneham Kosam (1999)
Action movies were gaining much importance at that period of time. Balakrishna’s “Samarasimha Reddy” was directed by B. Gopal and Chiranjeevi’s “Sneham Kosam” was directed by K.S. Ravi Kumar. Both films were released with a gap of a week. While “Sneham Kosam” was an average grosser, “Samarasimha Reddy” was an all time blockbuster at that time.
Annayya – Vamshodharakudu (2000)
This time Chiranjeevi’s “Annayya” took first place being the blockbuster. Balakrishna’s “ Vamshodharakudu” failed to compete with Chiranjeevi’s flick. This was the first time when these both stars’ movies clashed at the time of Sankranthi festival.
Narasimha Naidu – Mrugaraju (2001)
These two films clashed at the box office for the second time during the Sankranthi festival. Chiranjeevi’s “Mrugaraju” was an action film inspired by Hollywood movie “The Ghost and The Darkness.” The film was directed by Gunasekhar. Balakrishna’s “Narasimha Naidu” was directed by B. Gopal. While “Narasimha Naidu” was an industry hit at that time, “Mrugaraju” was a colossal dud.
Bhalevadivi Basu – Sri Manjunatha (2001)
Though “Mrugaraju” failed to impress the audience, “Sri Manjunatha” directed by K. Raghavendra Rao stood up as box office hit and made Balakrishna’s “Bhalevadivi Basu” directed by P.A. Arun Prasad an average grosser.
Anji – Lakshmi Narasimha (2004)
“Anji” starring Chiranjeevi was a fantasy film. The audience seemed to have not received the movie well, and it was a flop. On the other hand “Lakshmi Narasimha” was directed by Jayanth C. Paranjee. The film was a remake of the Tamil film “Samy.” The action-oriented film became a huge hit.
Khaidi No 150 – Gautamiputra Satakarni (2017)
After a long gap of 13 years, Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna’s movies clashed at the box-office once again for 2017 Sankranthi. Interestingly, both the movies are milestone movies for Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna. While ‘Khaidi No 150’ was Chiranjeevi’s 150th film, ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’ was Balakrishna’s 100th movie. Both the movies turned were hits. While ‘Khaidi No 150’ has emerged as the next biggest grosser after ‘Baahubali’, Balakrishna’s ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’ was a decent hit.
